 Poets Corner

 Frank Bond

Was I The One?

Was I the one,
who, oh so meek,
on fateful night
kissed Him on the cheek?

Was I the one,
who with iron chain,
bound Him fast,
as soldiers came?

Was I the one
judging His sins, so many,
knowing really
there were not any?

Was I the one,
scourged Him with whip,
laid on so hard
you heard flesh rip?

Was I in the crowd
that shouted and roared,
hating now, One
who once we adored?

Was I the one
who with such distaste
paused with malice
to spit on His face?

Was I the one
wove crown of thorn,
forcing on His brow
to show such scorn?

Was I the one
He with purple robe adorning
giving reed for sceptre
mockingly scorning?

Was I the one,
fashioned cross of wood,
made strong
to sacrifice One so good?

Was I the maker
of mocking plaque
'King of the Jews',
inscribed so stark?

Was I the one
drove nails in His limbs
showing contempt
for non-existent sins?

Was I the one
who raised Him high
so all of us
should see him die?

Was I the one,
when He begged for wine,
offered corrupted essence
of the vine?

Was I the one
who pierced His side
letting flow His lifeblood
from wound so wide?

Was I the one
on adjacent cross
who craved redemption
before ultimate loss?

Was I the one
who when it was ended,
divided his raiment
as His spirit ascended?

Was I the one
for whom He died
to save MY soul
who His will defied?
